TitleCompilationes Decretalium glo.
Description1. Compilatio Prima. Ff.1-74.
'(Beg. impf. at 2. 10. 3) Cant. et Wil. Dilecti filii nostri abbas et monachi. . . (ending 5. 37. 14) lupus oues comedit et pastor nescit'. Kuttner, p.334; Friedberg, Quinque Compilationes Antiquae, pp.1-65.
On f.74v are two chapter-tables, the first (to art. 1) in a hand very similar to that of the main text, which it corrects, the second (to art.3) in an anglicana hand c.1300 which makes corrections and additions to the first.
2. Compilatio Tertia. Ff.75-161v.
'Innocencius III magistris et scolaribus Bononie commorantibus. Deuocioni uestre insinuacione... (ending with a section not in the printed edition, following 5. 21. 10) que possunt in abbates assumi. In fine operis quiddam affectionis ardor scolastice me cogit . . . ad duodecimum noueritis contineri'. Kuttner, p.361; Friedberg, pp. 105-133. F.162 blank. On f.162v a chapter-table to art.2 in the same hand as the first table on f.74v.
3. Compilatio Secunda, glo. Tancred. Ff.163-204v. '(Text) Clemens III Anchonitano episcopo de constitutionibus. [P]reterea de lege illa . . . sicut archiepiscopus ipse precepit; (Glo.) Preterea etc. Hoc capitulum decisum est ab eo . . . '. Kuttner, p.349; Friedberg, pp.66-104.
There are some interesting notes: f.78v reversed pen-trials in a 14th-cent. anglicana hand include the opening of a charter by one Robertus; down the outer margin of f.79 the same hand has written 'Sciant presentes et fituras [sic] quod ego Robertus filius Gilleberti Colena de Teya maunde uilla cocessi [sic] dedi et hac presenti carta mea confirmaui'; f.143 across the head, in a similar hand: 'Omnibus Christi fidelibus hoc presens scriptum pateat uniuersis per presentes quod ego Willelmus Maydegod de Teya Maundeuilla Ressepi / Salutem reuerensz e honurz a sa tres honurable dame'; f.162v above the table a similar hand has written
'lx. xxix foliorum. xij quaterni', and in the inner margin 'Confiteor Deo celi et beate Marie et omnibus sanctis et uobis quia ego miser peccator peccaui . . . '. Below the table another hand has written [?C]xxix foliorum'. The hand of the second table on f.74v has written glosses in the lower margins of ff.201v and 203v.

Physical DescriptionBinding: Standard Lincoln 19th-cent. A paper leaf at each end. Lincoln Cathedral bookplate inside the front cover, where is written, in early 19th-cent. hands: 'All the former part of this Book is a Poem or Poems by ?Gearson De ?Hampole' and 'Pompeys Administrator in Law'. The first note is hard to read because the pale ink has spread; 'Gearson' may have been cancelled in favour of 'Hampole'. Paper labels on the spine: M.S. SUMMARIA DECRETALIUM / 38 / A 2. 7.
Construction: 204 parchment leaves, the upper and outer edges trimmed, many of the ample outer and lower margins excised; the top outer corners of ff.168-195 damaged with loss of text; ff.1 and 204v very dirty. The MS consists of three volumes bound together early, ruled for glossing which, however, only occurs in III. 340 x 230 mm. I has written space of 155 x 95 mm., and is pencil-ruled in 2 cols of 40 lines; II 165 x 105 mm., pencil-ruled in 2 cols of 50 lines; III 155 x 95 mm. (text only, the space occupied by the gloss varying), pencil-ruled in 2 cols of 39 lines. II and III are written below the top line. Collation: I has pencilled quire-numbers, at the foot of the first recto and last verso, running iii-x, indicating the loss of the original first two quires. II now lacks any regular quire-numbering. III has two quire-numbers still visible, arranged as for I: quire 21 is numbered xj, quire 23 xiij. These suggest that III originally followed I directly, a less logical ordering of the contents, changed at some time after c.1300 (see the second table on f.74v).
Hands: Each part is written in a single English book-hand, rubricating.
Decoration: (1) In I and II books open with champe initials (gold on blue and pink grounds with white tracery edged with black), surviving on ff.14a, 53v, 75, 101v, 138, 145v; others are missing with leaves lost after ff.39, 114. In III unfilled spaces for coloured initials. (2) Red or blue initials flourished in the other colour. (3) Plain red or blue initials and paraphs, except in III where are red paraphs and underlining in the gloss. Throughout are running heads in 2-colour capitals.
