TitleDecretales Gregorii
DescriptionDecretales Gregorii IX. Ff.1-113v. '(Beg. impf. in 1. 35. 8) omnisque conuencio debeat cessare . . . (ends impf. in 5. 40. 31) Ex parte uestra fuit propositum quod patriarcha'. The two gaps in the text are from 3. 41. 7 (' . . . quibus conficitur corpus') to 5. 1. 17 ('nascuntur Ideoque mandamus . . . '), and from 5. 3. 45 (' . . . sic suscepto donec') to 5. 40. 25 ('sancti Bertini collegio . . . '). In the margins, particularly the upper and lower, extensive glossing was added in the late 15th cent. The glosses are usually attributed, mostly to 'abbas', but also 'communis diuisio', 'archidiaconus', 'Ioannes in viᵗ°', 'Hostiensis'. The names of the tituli were added in the top outer comer of each recto at about the same time.

Physical DescriptionBinding: Standard Lincoln early 20th-cent., on bevelled wooden boards. A paper leaf at each end. Lincoln Cathedral bookplate inside the front cover. Paper labels on the spine: M. S. DECRETALS / 225. / B 6. 3.
Construction: 113 parchment leaves, numbered 1-11, 11a (a slip), 12-113, the upper and outer edges trimmed. The outer edges and corners of ff.1-28 have been lost by damp and mice, with loss of marginal glossing. Fifteenth-century foliation, in the top outer corner of each recto, has mainly been lost early on. The first number visible is 72 (f.15), but the series only becomes reasonably continuous from f.34, running 91(34)-143(86), 149(91)-162(104), 188(105)-194(111), 229(113). 190 x 135 (120 x 90) mm., plummet-ruled in 2 cols of c.40 lines.
Hands: The text is probably in one rather variable English book-hand to f.33a line 7. After that it is in a similar but better hand, at first irregular, but gradually becoming consistent, occasionally using anglicana forms. The commentary is in an elegant secretary hand influenced by humanistica. The inserted slip (f.11a) is written on in this hand.
Decoration: Plain red or blue initials, red paraphs, touching and underlining. Running titles in 2-colour capitals.

Collation1⁸, 2⁸(+ a slip after 3), 3-14⁸, a singleton. The discrepancy in the medieval numbering between ff.143 and 149 appears to be a mistake by the foliator. Otherwise, at least 57 leaves (7 quires and a leaf) are lacking from the beginning, 25 leaves (3 quires and a leaf) after quire 13, 33 leaves (4 quires and a leaf, probably the first of the next quire) after quire 14. The singleton was part of what was presumably the last quire in the book.
