| Physical Description | Binding: Alum-tawed goatskin, restored and rebound Feb 1990 by Nicholas Pickwoad with a conservation report. Previously standard Lincoln early 20th-cent., dilapidated, on bevelled wooden boards. Two paper leaves at each end. Lincoln Cathedral bookplate inside the front cover. Paper labels on the spine: M.S. BREVIARIUM DECRET. ET SUMMA DECRETALIUM ET DECRETALES INNOCENTII ET SUMMA DECRETALIUM ET SUMMA DECRET. FRAGM. / 29. / A 1. 12. Construction: Two original MSS, bound together either between the mid 15th cent. and 1833, or else between 1833 and the late 19th cent. probably the latter: I ff.1-200, II ff.201-220. II belongs at the end of MS 136. 220 parchment leaves, the upper and outer edges trimmed, the lower margins of many leaves mutil. 430 x 270 mm. Written space: I text.235 x 130; gloss-height varies, width 230; II text 240 x 130; gloss-width c.225 mm. I is pencil-ruled in 2 cols of 53 lines of text; 11 pencil-ruled in 2 cols with 47 lines of text; in both parts the number of gloss-lines varies. Collation: a bifolium, a singleton. In I three sets of pencilled quire-signatures, of the usual late medieval form, succeed each other, beginning afresh at quires 7 (f.52) and 21 (f.169). Catchwords show that quire 1 was always in that position, that quires are missing after 2 and 14, and that 6 has lost its two outermost bifolia. Ff.1-2 are the outer leaves of the original quire 1, the rest of which is quire 24 (ff.193-200). F.3, the first leaf of a lost quire, belongs after f.192. Hands: I: One good book-hand each for text and gloss, both probably Italian. The modifications to the text of arts.l and 4, in an English hand, show that the MS was in England soon after manufacture. II: See MS 136. For annotators see above. Decoration: I: (1) Unfilled spaces for major initials, followed by display-script in elongated red and blue capitals. (2) Smaller plain red or blue initials and paraphs. Rubrics often omitted. II: As for MS 136. No major initials. Initials of type (2) on ff.201, 205, 207(2), 207v, 208v, 209, 216, 219v. |

| Notes | Sec. fol. (f.193) de cetero (text); queritur (glo.); (f.2) Quia quesitum (text); ar quia facientes (glo.). History: II + MS 136 presumably came to the cathedral library after Salysbury's death in 1460. Neither part is identifiable in Wren Cat.; Garvey C 1. 13 ('Gregorii Papae Decretale') may mean MS 136, then complete, and so may Apthorp, p.281 ('Gregorii IX Papae; Decretale, fol.'). In both Garvey and Apthorp MS B. 1. 2 (i.e. MS 136) is called 'Decretalium liber sextus', which correctly describes only MS 198 (B. 5. 7), called by them 'Decretalia'. Woolley, pp. 15-16. |
