1. Ivo of Chartres, Panormia. Ff.2-101. 'Incipiunt sancti canones. Prima pars continet de fide, de diuersis heresibus, de sacramento fidei…; Augustinus. [C]redimus unum Deum esse patrem … (VIII. 134) Ergo parum est uerum loqui nisi etiam in corde ita sit.' Then 'Augustinus in libro de Men<da>tio require in quarto folio. Primum est capitale mendatium' (referring to f.97). PL 161. 1046-1338. This copy lacks the prol., VIII. 124 is placed between chs.82 and 83 (f.97) as in most copies, three additions from Ivo, Decr. XII. 12-13, occur after ch. 93 (f.98) as in many copies, and chs.135-154 are omitted. (Chs.135-136 are an appendix to some copies; chs. 137-154 do not belong to the Panormia at all). At the head of f.2 is 'Iuonis Carnotensis Panormia H 23' in Garvey's hand. A 15th-cent. hand has written bk.-nos. as running titles, continuing bk.VIII to f.111.
2. The prologue to Ivo, Decretum (PL 161. 50A-60A). Ff.101-105. ‘Preceptiones et prohibitiones aliae mobiles sunt, aliae immobiles … quanto magis diuine? Hoc hactenus.'

4. Extracts on miscellaneous topics in theology and canon law. Ff.105v-111. Theol. extracts from Bede and Augustine ff.105v-107, 'Beda. Celum quidem aereum igne marcescet… De apparicionibus Domini. Plures quidem fuere appariciones … quem admodum uidistis eum euntem in celum. Expl<ic>it.'; extracts on canon law, some at least from the Decretum, ff.107-111, citing conciliar canons and papal decrees, 'Penitentiale Theodoli', 'Penitentiale Romanum', Isidore, Fructuosus, Jerome and Orosius. None of the quoted material is later than the ninth century except for the Acts of Urban II's Council of Piacenza, 1095 (chs.i-vii only), ff.110v-111: 'Vrbani papae in concilio Placentino de simoniachis. Anno dominice incarnationis m.x.cv. indictione iii. celebrata est Placentiae sinodus presidente domno Vrbano papa … ut ubi primum locum debeant obtinere (Mansi XX, pp.804-5)'. At the foot of ff.107v-108 is the Greek alphabet with the names of the letters and their numerical equivalents. Near the foot of f.111 are three lines of erased inscription; the first line can be read under ultra-violet light: 'Hic liber est fratris Bernardi de Delnia ordinis predicatorum', in a 14th-cent. cursive hand; over the next line, which seems to include the name of a convent, is written, in a 15th-cent. bastard hand, 'Celestinorum de Marcoussiaco'. Of the same provenance is London, BL Burney 247. On f.111v are several notes. The more important are: (a) Four lines of dated events: the capture of Jerusalem, founding of Cîteaux, deaths of Thomas Becket and Richard of England, and the Fourth Lateran Council, in a hand not much later than the last event; (b) A table for calculating the date of Easter, in the same or a similar hand; (c) A 15th-cent. letter, much rubbed. |
| Physical Description | Binding: Standard Lincoln 17th-cent., recently rebacked. Two paper leaves at each end. Lincoln Cathedral bookplate inside the front cover. On the spine, gilt: PANORMIA/ MS. 192.
Construction: 111 leaves of thick, stiff parchment, the upper and outer edges trimmed. 275 x 165 (210 x 120) mm., blind-ruled in 39 long lines.
Hands: A single small, neat French hand throughout, except for the rubrication ff.50-99, in another hand of similar type, which also makes marginal corrections to the text.
Decoration: (1) Unfilled space for the opening initial on f.2; the other books open with large red or blue initials, sometimes arabesqued in the second colour, and usually accompanied by red-touched display-script; (2) Plain red initials. Extensive rubrication. |
