| Description | F.1, once pasted down, blank but for a few defaced notes in a 13th-cent. anglicana hand. Similar notes, in hands of this type, are on f.1v. Gratian, Decretum. Ff.2-201v. '(Beg. impf.in I. i. 1) Hinc Ysiodorus in libro vi. ethimologiarum ait . . . (ends impf. in III. ii. lxxii) quod Dominus dixerat Qui non manducat', the last word being a catchword in a 14th-cent. hand. PL 187. 21-1769B. The gloss 'Ecce uicit Leo' (Kuttner, p.59ff) is written in the margins, on specially ruled lines, on ff.10-19v, 61v-111v, 117rv. F.163rv heavily glossed in a late 13th-cent. anglicana hand. Much other annotation in hands of this sort, including: f.47 'Maior in effectu baptissmus corporis esse' (3 lines; Walther 10625), f.66v 'Illustris primus, medius spectabilis, imus' (distich), f.101 'Auertit, purgat, defendit, sanctificatque' (distich), ff.112v and 113v, in one hand, 'nota contra priorem de Okebur" and 'Nota contra reges et pro ecclesia Wynt' scilicet de manerio que dicitur Swynestone reddendo ecclesie', f.164 'Que mihi uel cuius mea natum fonte leuauit' (4 lines), f.198v 'Vitis radix fructus sunt una racemus' (4 lines), f.199v 'Corpus de pane, corpus de uirgine primum' (distich), 'Iustus et iniustus comedit cum sanguine corpus' (distich), f. 200v 'Verborum forma uinum qui cum mixta sit unda' (3 lines). | Physical Description | Binding: Standard Lincoln 19th-cent., dilapidated. Two paper leaves at each end. Lincoln Cathedral bookplate inside the front cover. Paper labels on the spine: M.S. DECRETUM GRATIANI / 137 / B 1. 3. At the foot of f.1 is a mark from a chain-staple.
Construction: 201 parchment leaves, the upper and outer edges trimmed. 425 x 300 (300 x 160) mm., plummet-ruled in 2 cols of c.60 lines. Pricked in the outer margins only.
Hands: Written throughout in an. expert, probably French book-hand. The gloss may be in the same hand, though using note-hand forms. Most rubrics were omitted. Where they do occur (ff.2, 189-201v, they are in a separate hand.
Decoration: Major initials have been excised on ff.2 and 50. Those that remain are red and blue, flourished in both colours. (2) Red or blue initials flourished in the other colour; (3) Plain red or blue initials. Distinction-nos. in the margins in red and mulberry. Running titles in red capitals. |

| Collation | A singleton, 1-7¹⁰, 8¹²(6, 8 canc.), 9-20¹⁰. The quires are numbered, in roman numerals, at the foot of the last verso, and have two sets of signatures (one in red) of the usual late medieval form. Half-leaves are 4,7 in quires 4, 11-13, 16, 19-20; 2, 4, 7, 9 in quires 3, 5-7, 14-15, 17; 3, 4, 7, 8 in quire 2; 5, 6 in quire 10, and 1-3, 5-6, 8-10 in quire 18. |
